Morning Chores in February

There's something magical about morning chores when frost covers everything. The chickens were especially chatty today, probably complaining about the cold water. Breaking ice on the livestock tanks is my least favorite winter job, but watching the steam rise from the warm barn while the sun comes up over the ridge makes it all worthwhile. Days like this remind me why we chose this life.

First Successful Maple Syrup Season!

After three years of learning and making mistakes, we finally had a maple syrup season that actually worked! 50 gallons of sap boiled down to 1.25 gallons of beautiful amber syrup. My grandfather would be proud. The sugar shack he built in the 1940s is still going strong, and now my kids are learning the same skills he taught me. This is what preserving culture looks like.

When the Creek Flooded

Last week's storm brought more rain than we've seen in years. Our normally peaceful creek became a raging torrent and took out 50 feet of fencing. But here's what happened next: within 2 hours of posting in our regional homestead group, we had 8 neighbors show up with tools, fence posts, and coffee. By sunset, the fence was rebuilt—stronger than before. This is why community matters.

The Heritage Breed Experiment

Started raising Gloucestershire Old Spots pigs this year instead of conventional breeds. They're slower growing, which seemed like a disadvantage at first. But watching them forage, root, and actually improve our pasture soil—this is what sustainable farming is supposed to be. Not everything needs to be optimized for speed and profit. Sometimes the old ways are better.

Evening Garden Walk

Just finished my evening walk through the garden. The tomatoes are finally starting to set fruit, the beans are climbing strong, and I spotted three different species of beneficial insects. These quiet moments—just me, the plants, and the setting sun—are what fill my soul. Tomorrow I'll be back at my day job, but tonight I'm a farmer.

We Saved the Henderson Farm!

Remember when I posted about the Henderson place potentially being sold to developers? UPDATE: We found them a buyer! A young couple from our homestead network who will keep it as working farmland. 80 acres preserved. This is exactly why this community exists. When we work together, we can compete with developers and preserve our way of life.
